ENGINE OPERATING PROBLEMS

Engine Will Not Start Possible Cause Correction
Check control positions.
Engine switch OFF. Turn engine switch ON.
Choke lever not in CHOKE (E)position
(cold engine).
Move choke lever to CHOKE(E)
position.
Check fuel.
Out of fuel. Addfuel.
Bad fuel, tiller stored without treating or
draining gasoline, refueled with bad
gasoline.
Drain fuel tank. Refuel with fresh
gasoline.
Check spark plug. Spark plug faulty, fouled, or has
incorrect gap.
Clean, gap, or replace the spark plug.
Contact an authorized Honda servicing
dealer, or refer to shop manual.
Fuel filter restricted, carburetor
malfunction, ignition malfunction,
valves stuck, etc.
Replace or repair faulty components as
needed.
Low Power or Engine Speed
Won’t Increase PossibleCause Correction
Check air filter. Filter dirty or restricted. Check, clean or replace air filter.
Check fuel filter. Filter dirty or restricted. Replace fuel filter.
Check throttle cable. Outof adjustment, broken, or bent. Adjust cable, or replace if necessary
Tiller tines (or attachment) won’t
stop turning when throttle is at
SLOW position
Possible Cause Correction
Check throttle control and cable. Fault in throttle controlor cable; throttle
cable out of adjustment or bent.
Check throttle control parts, adjustor
replace cable if necessary.
Check engine idle speed. Idle speed adjusted too high. Adjust idle speed.
Contact an authorized Hondaservicing
dealer, or refer to shop manual.
Clutch springs worn or clutch system
faulty.
Replace clutch springs or replace or
repair other clutch system parts.
