Creating a Virtual Volume from Existing Datastores

Follow these steps to create a virtual volume from an existing datastore:

1.In the main menu navigation, click MenuInventoryDatastores and Datastore Clusters.

2.Go to HP 3PARVirtual Volumes.

3.Click Provision Similar. The Welcome page appears.

NOTE: To prevent the welcome page from displaying in the future, select the “Skip this page in the future when provisioning storage” check box.

4.Click Next to enter the virtual volume parameters.

5.Enter the appropriate parameters, then click Next.

Number of virtual volumes - Number of virtual volumes to be provisioned. You can specify from 1 to 99 where 1 is the default.

virtual volume name - Name for the virtual volume.

NOTE: When choosing a name for creating virtual volumes, you must consider the following:

If the number of virtual volume count equals 1, the virtual volume name is set to 31 and the Datastore name is set to 42.

If number of the virtual volume count is greater than 1, the virtual volume name prefix is set to 26 and the Datastore name prefix is set to 31.

Size - Specifies the size. When selecting the datastore VMFS-3 type, the VV size range is from 512 MB to 2 TB. When selecting the datastore VMFS-5 type, the size range for the virtual volume is from 512 MB to 16 TB.

When specifying the size for a virtual volume, you must keep in mind that 256 MB is reserved for each node. Depending on the cluster type, the minimum virtual volume size is calculated as 256 MB times the number of nodes.

In a two node system, 512 MB is reserved when a TPVV is created. If an 80% user limit is set for a 512 MB TPVV, only 410 MB of space can be allocated. However 512 MB is the least amount required so the creation of the virtual volume fails. In other words, If the allocation limit is set, the space after the % needs to be at least 512 MB in a 2 node cluster.
