1.Right-click the virtual disk you wish to copy to a datastore and click Copy to Datastore.

NOTE: When using the Copy to Datastore option to copy a virtual disk to a datastore, it is recommended that the copy and paste functions of the datastore browser be used in order to preserve the VMware Thin Provisioning disk feature.

2.Select a datastore on the ESX host where the virtual copy is mounted.

Restoring a Guest OS File or Directory from a Virtual Copy

The second context menu command available in virtual disks grid allows you to attach a virtual disk available on the selected virtual copy to any of the VMs currently running on the ESX/ESX(i) host where the virtual copy is mounted.

1.Right-click the virtual disk you wish to attach and click Mount on Virtual Machine.

2.Select a VM on the ESX/ESX(i) host where the virtual copy is mounted.

3.When prompted for confirmation, click OK.

4.Once the task is completed, verify that the selected VM appears under the VM Attached column.

The remainder of the restore operation must be performed on the VM. This involves re-scanning for new disks and mounting the file system, and then manually copying the files.

Once the restore is complete, the virtual disk can be unmounted from the VM.

5.Right-click the virtual disk to be unmounted and click Unmount from Virtual Machine <VM name>.
