Checking tape position

Whenyou change the recorder operation
modefrom the stop mode to fastforward
orrewind mode, or when you perform an
IndexSearch or Instant Review, the tape
positionindicator appears.
Theposition of “q”inrelationto“0
(beginning)or “+” (end) shows you where
you are on the tape.
Set“O.S.D.” to “ON”.

Changing display information

Eachtime you press ––:––,the displaypanel shows
thechannel number and the clock time alternatively.
Youcan change display in the stop, recording or
recordingpause mode, or during rewind/fast-
forwardhigh-speed search.
When“O.S.D.” is set to “ON” and ––:––onthe
remotecontrol is pressed, time counter will appear on the TV
screen.To reset the time counter, press 0000 on the remote
control.

Function settings

Youcan use the other useful function settings on the Function Set
screen.
Turnon the recorder and the TV,and set your TV to its AV mode
orvideo channel.

rtto place the pointer next to
“FUNCTIONSET”, then press OK or e.

B.E.S.T.ON /OFF
WhenB.E.S.T. (Biconditional Equalized Signal Tracking) system is
setto “ON”, this recorder checks the condition of the tape in use
duringplayback and recording, and compensates to provide the
highest-possiblepictures. This takes place whenever you play
backa tape or start recording after inserting a tape.
NOTE:
Therecorder checks the tape condition for about 7 seconds, then
startsrecording. To make sure you record the desired scene or
programcompletely, perform the following steps:
APressand hold PAU SE (9), and press REC (7). After about
7seconds, the recorder re-entersRecord Pause mode.
BPressPLAY (4) to start recording.
PICTURECONTROL AUTO(NORM)/EDIT/SOFT/SHARP
Thisfunction helps you to adjust the playback picture quality
accordingto your preference.
AUTO(NORM): Normally select this. Picture quality is adjusted
automatically.When “B.E.S.T.”is “OFF”, “NORM” will appear
insteadof “AUTO”.
EDIT:Minimizes picture degradation during editing (recording and
playback).
SOFT:Reduces image coarseness whenviewing overplayed tapes
containingmuch noise.
SHARP:Clearer, sharper-edged picture when viewing images with
muchflat, same-coloured surfaces such as cartoons.
NOTE:
Select“EDIT” when you are editing tapes. After you finish editing
thetapes, select “AUTO”.
PAL/MESECAMAUTO / PAL / MESECAM
Selectthe appropriate colour system for recording or playback.
AUTO:Usually set to this mode. The appropriate colour system
(PALor MESECAM) will be selected depending on the playback or
recordingsignals.
Ifthe “AUTO” mode does not work properly,select either of the
followingmanual modes.
PAL: Torecord PAL signals, or playback a PALtape.
MESECAM:To record SECAM signals, or playbacka SECAM or
MESECAMtape.
NOTES:
SECAMsignals will always be recorded as MESECAM. Select
“AUTO”or “MESECAM” when recording SECAM signals.
Whenplaying back a SECAM tape, select“AUTO” or
“MESECAM”.The playback picture will always be
monochrome.
NTSCNTSC3.58 / NTSC4.43 / NTSC]PA L
Torecord NTSC signals or playback a NTSC tape, it will be
necessaryto select the appropriate mode.
NTSC3.58: Torecord NTSC signals or playback a NTSC tape.
NTSC4.43: Torecord NTSC4.43 signals or playback a NTSC4.43
tape.
NTSC]PAL: Toplayback a NTSC tape onPAL TV.
NOTE:
The “NTS C]PAL”mode does not work during recording. In this
mode,NTSC signals will be recorded as NTSC3.58.
TheMenu screen is distorted during playing back a NTSC tape
onPAL TV. Stop playbackand access the Menu screen again.
Inthe “NTSC4.43” mode, with some TVs, on-screen displays
(Programscreen, etc.) may roll up or down and there may be a
lossof colour. When this happens, select the “NTSC3.58”
mode.
AUTOTIMER —ON/OFF
Whenthis function is set to “ON”:
Thetimer recording standby mode is automatically engaged when
therecorder is turned off. It is temporarily canceled when the
recorderis turned on.You do not have to press #to engage or
disengaget hetimer recordingstandby mode.
Whenthis function is set to “OFF”:
Youhave to press #to engage or disengage the timer recording
standbymode.
O.S.D.ON /OFF
Whenthis function is set to “ON”, various recorder status
information(on-screen display) appears on the screen.
NOTE:
Whenyou use this recorder as the source player for editing a tape,
besure to set this function to “OFF”; otherwise, the recorder status
information(on-screen display) will be recorded on the edited
tape.
