Getting Started with MIDI Music Creation Software

If you are new to MIDI (Musical Ins trument Digital Interface), you m ay initially find it challenging to understand h ow KeyStudio
interacts with the computer You will find that using a computer-based sound source and re cording system allows for access to
an extremely large array of high quality so unds, a large graphic user interface , and freedom to work with many music creation
applications A basic understanding o f MIDI will enable you to take advantage of its wealth o f creative possibilities
Pressing one of the keys of KeyStudio 49i causes the keyboard to send out M IDI (Musical Inst rument Digital Interface) dat a MIDI
data gives instructions on how a sound should play These instr uctions dictate parameters such as what note to play, when to play it ,
how loud to play it, and which sound to use
When using a virtual instrument within rec ording software such as Ableton Live Li te, data from the KeyStudio keyboard can be sent
to the sequencer software, routed to a virtual i nstrument that is loaded within that soft ware, and sent to an audio output, turning MID I
data into audible sounds For this, you must configur e your music software to read MIDI dat a being sent from KeyStudio and play the
sound back accordingly In many music applications , this entails going into the Options, Preferen ces, or Device Set-Up menu in your
music software application and selec ting the appropriate MIDI input devic e
In Windows XP and Windows Vista, the KeyStudio MI DI input will appear as “USB Audio D evice” if the optional drivers have not
been installed After installing these d rivers, KeyStudio will appear as “M-Au dio KeyStudio IO ”* Please consult your software’s
documentation for instructions on how to configure the s oftware for use with MIDI input dev ices

In addition to selecting MIDI inputs, aud io outputs must be selected to hear sounds created by vi rtual MIDI instruments Be s ure
“M-Audio KeyStudio IO” or “USB Audio Device” is se lected as the audio output within your recording so ftware, and that you have
headphones connected to the headphone outputs on the f ront of KeyStudio or amplified speakers conne cted to 1/4” outputs on the
back of KeyStudio
