ALens f-number

The f-number given in lens names is the maximum aperture of the lens.

ACompatible Non-CPU Lenses

When using non-CPU lenses and accessories, rotate the camera mode dial to A or M and set aperture using the lens aperture ring. In other modes, the shutter-release is disabled. Non- CPU lens data (0 172) can be used to enable many of the features available with CPU lenses, including color matrix metering; if no data are provided, center-weighted metering will be used in place of color matrix metering, while if the maximum aperture is not provided, the camera aperture display will show the number of stops from maximum aperture and the actual aperture value must be read off the lens aperture ring.

AThe Built-in Flash

The built-in flash can be used with CPU lenses with focal lengths of 24 mm (16 mm in DX format) to 300 mm, although in some cases the flash may be unable to entirely light the subject at some ranges or focal lengths due to shadows cast by the lens, while lenses that block the subject’s view of the red-eye reduction lamp may interfere with red-eye reduction. Remove lens hoods to prevent shadows. The flash has a minimum range of 0.6 m (2 ft) and can not be used in the macro range of macro zoom lenses. The flash may be unable to light the entire subject with the following lenses at ranges less than those given below:
