FOREWORD

The Zoom-Nikkor ED 80 ~ 200mm f/2.8 is the world's fastest zoom lens. Its large maximum aperture presents bright viewfinder images for easy focusing and makes this lens ideal for sports or indoor events where fast shutter speeds are required. To increase its convenience, this lens was designed with quick, one-ring focusing and zooming; sim- ply turn the ring to focus and push or pull it to zoom.

This lens has an optical construction of 15 elements in 11 groups and a 2.5x zoom range. It uses Nikon "Extra-low Dispersion" (ED) glass to produce sharp images with high contrast from the shortest to the longest focal length and ensure that aberrations are well corrected. In addition, Nikon Integrated Coating (NIC) is applied to all air-to- glass surfaces of the lens elements to minimize ghost images and flare and produce nat- urally rendered colors. With suitably equipped Nikon cameras, this lens offers "auto- matic maximum aperture indexing" (AI). The meter coupling ridge and automatic dia- phragm function together to permit full aperture exposure measurement. For non-AI type Nikon cameras, the lens is also fitted with a meter coupling shoe to permit the same operation.

MOUNTING THE LENS

A

Position the lens in the camera's bayonet mount, lining up the aperture index 2 on the lens with the lens mounting index on the camera. Twist the camera body clockwise until it clicks into place.

To remove, depress the lens release button on the camera and twist the camera body counterclockwise.

Note: When mounting the lens on a camera with a meter coupling lever (AI type), make sure that the camera's meter coupling lever is correctly positioned; when mount- ing on a camera without this lever (non-AI type), "manual" maximum aperture index- ing is required. In both cases, refer to the camera's instruction manual.

FOCUSING/ZOOMING

Bt B2 • B3

First, loosen the locking screw ® on the focusing/zooming ring ® .

The Zoom-Nikkor ED 80 ~ 200mm f/2.8 focuses from infinity to 10 feet (2.5m). To focus, turn the ring until the image on the focusing screen appears sharp and crisp.

For maximum focusing accuracy, focus carefully with the focusing/zooming ring at the 200mm setting. The shallow depth-of-field and large image scale at this focal length will allow you to focus the lens extremely accurately. There is no need to refocus with each change in focal length.

To zoom in or out, look through the viewfinder and slide the ring back and forth until the desired composition is framed on the focusing screen. When the ring is pushed for- ward for shorter focal lengths, a five-position scale is uncovered on the lens barrel to show which focal length the lens is set for. To preset the lens for a specific focal length, align the edge of the ring with the top edge of the digits.

Finally, retighten the locking screw to hold the setting.

Zoom-Nikkor ED 80-200mm f/2.8 specifications

The Nikon Zoom-Nikkor ED 80-200mm f/2.8 is a professional-grade telephoto zoom lens that has garnered acclaim among photographers for its impressive optical performance and build quality. This lens is particularly favored for portrait, wedding, and wildlife photography, where versatility and image quality are paramount.

One of the standout features of the lens is its constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range. This capability allows photographers to shoot in low-light conditions and achieve a beautifully shallow depth of field, ensuring subjects are sharp and backgrounds are softly rendered. The fast aperture also facilitates faster shutter speeds, reducing the risk of motion blur, making it an excellent tool for action shots.

The lens incorporates Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements, which help to minimize chromatic aberrations and achieve high contrast and sharp images even at wide apertures. These ED elements work in conjunction with multiple multi-coated surfaces that enhance light transmission and reduce flare, providing outstanding image quality across a variety of shooting situations.

In terms of construction, the Nikon Zoom-Nikkor ED 80-200mm f/2.8 features a robust and durable design, built to withstand the rigors of professional use. The lens barrel is made of high-quality materials that provide resistance to dust and moisture, ensuring reliability even in challenging environments. This makes it a favorite among photographers working in unpredictable weather.

Focusing is another strong point of this lens, with a fast and accurate internal focusing system that allows for quick adjustments without altering the lens's physical length. This contributes to its overall balance and handling, especially important during extended shooting sessions. The lens is compatible with Nikon's autofocus systems, including both standard and professional models, further enhancing its versatility.

The Nikon Zoom-Nikkor ED 80-200mm f/2.8 also features a 9-blade diaphragm which contributes to beautiful bokeh, making out-of-focus areas aesthetically pleasing and adding an artistic touch to images. The lens accepts 77mm filters, allowing photographers to further enhance their shooting techniques by utilizing polarizers, ND filters, and more.

In conclusion, the Nikon Zoom-Nikkor ED 80-200mm f/2.8 is a powerhouse lens celebrated for its exceptional optical performance, fast aperture, and durable construction. Whether used for professional portraits, sports photography, or wildlife shots, this lens consistently delivers stunning image quality that meets the demands of discerning photographers. Its combination of advanced technologies and user-friendly features solidifies its position as a go-to choice for both amateurs and professionals alike.
