Angle
Some DVD discs feature scen es simultaneously shot fro m different angles. The A NGLE button
can be used to view the scene fr om different angles. (A NGLE Indicator lights up o n the unit
when a scene recorded fro m different angles is detec ted.)
Bitstream
This is the digital form of mult i-channel audio data (e .g., 5.1 channel) before it is decoded into
its various channels.
Chapter Number
Titles are subdivided into num bered sections. You can quickl y search for a favorite scene us ing
these numbers.
Decoder
A decoder restores the co ded audio signals on DVDs to nor mal. This is called decod ing.
Dolby Digital
This is a method of coding digit al signals developed by Dolby La boratories. Apart f rom stereo
(2-channel) audio, these si gnals can also be multichan nel audio. A large amount of audio
information can be recor ded on one disc using this metho d.
Dolby Pro Logic
A surround system where a 4- channel audio track is rec orded as 2 channels and then is
restored to 4 channels for play. The sur round channel is monaural a nd can reproduce up to 7
kHz.
DTS (Digital Theate r Systems)
This surround system is used in ma ny movie theaters around the wo rld. There is good
separation between the ch annels, so realistic sound ef fects are possible.
Dynamic range
Dynamic range is the differ ence between the lowest leve l of sound that can be heard above t he
noise of the equipment and the hig hest level of sound before distor tion occurs.
DVD
A high-density optic al disc on which high-qu ality pictures and sound h ave been digitally
recorded. DVD incorpo rates new video compress ion technology (MPEG II ) and high-density
recording technology wh ich allow entire movies to be re corded with incredibl e playback quality.
Film and video
DVD-Videos are record ed using either film or vide o. Usually, film is recorded at 24 fr ames per
second, the rate movies are f ilmed at, while video is rec orded at 30 frames per sec ond.
Frame still and field s till
Frames are the still pictures th at go together to make a moving pic ture. There are about 30
frames shown each second. O ne frame is made up of two fi elds. A regular television sho ws
these fields one after th e other to create frames.
A still is shown when you pause a movin g picture. A frame still is made u p of two alternating
fields, so the picture may app ear blurred, but overall quali ty is high. A field still is not b lurred,
but it has only half the informat ion of a frame still so picture q uality is lower.
Linear PCM (pulse cod e modulation)
These are uncompressed di gital signals, similar to th ose found on CDs.
Playback Control
With Video CD (version 2.0) , scenes or informatio n may be selected for viewing o r listening
from an interactive menu that ap pears on the TV screen.
Regional Code
This is a copyright protect ion measure unique to DVD-V ideo. There are 6 regional c odes
worldwide. In order to play a disc e ncoded with a regional c ode, the DVD player must be
equipped with the same code.
Sampling bit number
This is the resolution shown i n number of bits to determine how f aithfully the sampled ana log
frequency was expressed at th e time the signal was conver ted from analog to digital .
Sampling Frequency
This is the number of times sampl ing is performed in (1) second s hown in Hz units at the time
the signal is converted fro m analog to digital using the P CM method. The greater the num ber,
the higher the sound quality.
Subtitles
Written dialogue which app ears at the bottom of the scr een.
Time Number
The elapsed play time from the s tart of a disc or title. Use to qu ickly find scenes. (M ay not work
with some discs.)
Title Number
For DVD discs with two or more t itles, the titles are numb ered as title 1, title 2, etc.
Track N umbe r
Numbers assigned to tracks o n Video CDs and CDs to allow sp ecific tracks to be quick ly
located.
Video CD
CD containing picture and s ound with same quality level a s video tape. This unit also sup ports
Video CDs with playback c ontrol (version 2.0).
V.S.S. Feature
Virtual surround soun d playback is possible even wit h only 2 speakers. For example, usi ng this
unit’s built-in speakers, the 2 sp eakers of a connected stereo, et c., you can enjoy a surround
sound effect. If the disc was r ecorded in Dolby Digita l 5.1 ch, with just the two front L/ R
speakers, you will feel as if you are h earing sound from nonexist ent speakers on both sides of
you. This effect also works w ith Dolby Digital 2-chan nel discs.
