Taking Pictures using Night Portrait Mode

Night Portrait Mode allows you to take pictures against a nighttime landscape. By using the flash and a slow shutter speed, the picture will show the subject and the background brighter than they appear in real life.

The subject should be positioned within the available flash range

[1.31 feet (40 cm) – 10.8 feet (3.3 m) (Wide), 1.31 feet (40 cm) – 6.56 feet (2 m) (Tele)].

(When setting to ISO200/AUTO)

We recommend rotating the zoom lever to Wide.

The focus range is 3.28 feet (1 m) – 9.84 feet (3 m).

ª Technique for Night portrait mode

When you record pictures holding the camera with your hands, keep the camera firmly with activating the stabilizer function. (Shutter speed: max. 1/8th) When you turn the stabilizer function to [OFF], we recommend using a tripod since the shutter speed becomes slow (max. about 1 second).

Keep the subject still for about 1 second after taking a picture.

Flash setting is fixed to Slow sync./

Red-eye reduction [ ].

The shutter may be kept closed (max. about 8 seconds) after taking a picture with slow shutter speed, but it is not a malfunction.

You can change the white balance setting. (P58)

When you take pictures in dark places, noises may become visible.

To avoid noises, we recommend setting [PICT.ADJ.] to [NATURAL]. (P70)

When you record pictures in dark places, it may be difficult to focus on the subject. We recommend recording pictures in bright places with contrast using the AF/AE lock (P33).
