Hubs er et hovedelement i plug-and-play-arkitekturen for USB. Figuren viser en typisk hub. Hubs skal forenkle USB-opkoblingen for brugeren og give en ukompliceret robusthed til lav pris.

Hubs er ledningssamlere, der realiserer USB’ens muligheder for mange opkoblinger. Tilkoblingsstederne betegnes som porte. Hver hub omdanner et enkelt tilkoblingspunkt til flere tilkoblingspunkter. Arkitekturen understøtter sammenkædning af flere hubs.

Upstream-porten på en hub forbinder den med værtsmaskinen. Hver af de andre downstream-porte i en hub tillader opkobling til en anden hub eller funktion. Hubs kan registrere, tilsluttes og frakobles ved hver downstream-port og bærer strømforsyningen til downstream-enhederne. Hver downstream-port kan aktiveres og konfigureres ved fuld eller lav hastighed. Hub’en isolerer lavhastighedsporte fra fuldhastighedssignalering.

En hub består af to dele: Hub Controlleren og Hub Repeateren. Repeateren er en protokolstyret switch mellem upstream-porten og downstream-portene. Den indeholder også hardwaresupport til nulstilling og standsning/genoptagning af signalstrømmen. Controlleren indeholder interface- registrene til kommunikation til/fra værtsmaskinen. Med hub-specifikke status- og styrekommandoer kan værtsmaskinen konfigurere en hub og overvåge og styre dens porte.

Enhed

En logisk eller fysisk enhed, der udfører en funktion. Selve den beskrevne enhed afhænger af betegnelsens sammenhæng. På nederste niveau kan enheden være betegnelsen på en enkelt hardwarekomponent som i en hukommelsesenhed. På et højere niveau kan det være en samling af hardwarekomponenter, der udfører en bestemt funktion, for eksempel en USB- enhed. På et endnu højere niveau kan udtrykket enhed være betegnelsen for den funktion, der udføres af en enhed, der er forbundet til USB’en, for eksempel en data/FAX modem-enhed. Enheder kan være fysiske, elektriske, adresserbare og logiske.
