Active matrix (Aktiv matrix)

Det er en slags flydende skærmkrystalstruktur, hvor skiftende transistorer knyttes til hver enkelt pixel for at kontrollere til/fra-spænding. Den giver en lysere og skarpere skærm med en større synsvinkel end en passiv matrix-skærmvisning. Se også TFT (thin film transistor) [tynd filmtransistor].

Amorphous silicon (a-Si, Amorphous-silikone)

Et halvledermateriale, der bruges til at fremstille tynde filmtransistorlag (TFT'er) på en aktiv LCD- matrix.

Aspect ratio (Formatforhold)

Bredde/højde-forholdet på skærmens aktive område. Normalt har de fleste skærme et formatforhold på 4:3. Bredskærme eller -TV'er har et formatforhold på 16:9 eller 16:10.

Backlight (Baggrundslys)

Lyskilde for transmitiv LCD-skærm. Der er to teknikker, der bruges nu til dags for LCD-design. De fleste TFT LCD-paneler bruger CCFL'er (cold cathode fluorescent light) [koldt katodeflourescent lys] og et diffusionspanel lige bag ved det flydende krystallag. Ny teknologi bruger Light Emitting Diodes (LED) [lysudsendende dioder] er under stadig udvikling.
