BEFORE STARTINGSAW
WARNING: Be sure to read the
electricalsafety informationin the SAFE -
TYRULES section of this manual before
you begin. Ifyou donot understand the
electrical safety information do not at-
tempt to use your unit.Seek help from
someone that does understand the in-
formation or call the customer assis-
tance helpline at 1-800-554-6723.
GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN OIL
Thebar and chain require lubrication. The
manually--operated chain oiler provides
lubricationto the chain and guide bar.Be
sureto fill the bar oiltank before each cut-
tingsession. The oiler activator/baroil cap
must be used regularly and often enough
tomaintain a thin film of oil on the bar and
chain while saw is cutting. It is recom-
mended that theoiler actuator/bar oil cap
be operated everyten (10) seconds and
held for approximately three (3) seconds
each time it is pressed. For maximum
guide bar and chain life,we recommend
you use Poulan chain saw bar oil.If Pou-
lan bar oil is not available, you may usea
good grade SAE 30 oil until you are able
to obtain Poulan brand. The oiloutput is
manually metered duringoperation. Use
afunnel to fill the tank. Replace oil cap se -
curely. Ch eck oil level after eve ry 15 min-
utes of operation.
STOPPINGYOUR SAW
SRelease the triggerswitch.
SIfmotor does not stop, disconnect the
extension cord. Discontinue use of
theunit until repaired by an authorized
service dealer.
STARTINGYOUR SAW
1. Connect the saw to a power source
usingthe proper size extension cord
(see SELECTAN EXTENSION CORD).
2. Push in switch lock out button.
3. Squeeze and hold the trigger switch.
CUTTING METHODS
OPERATINGTIPS
SCheck chain tension before first use
and after 1 minuteof operation. See
CHECKCHAIN TENSION in the MAINT E-
NANCE section.
SCutwood only. Do not cut metal, plas-
tics,masonry, non-wood building ma-
terials,etc.
SStopthe saw if the chain strikes a for-
eignobject. Inspectthe saw and repair
partsas nec essary.
SKeep the chain out of dirt and sand.
Evena small amount of dirt will quickly
dulla chain and increase the possibil-
ity of kickback.
SPracticecutting a few smalllogs using
the followingsteps. This will help you
getthe “feel” of using your saw before
you begin a majorsawing operation.
SSqueezethe trigger switch and allow
unitto reach full speed before cutting.
SBegin cutting with the saw frame
againstthe log.
SKeepthe motor at full speed the en-
tire time you are cutting.
SReleasetrigger switch as soon as cut
is completed, allowing motor to stop .
SKeepthe cord away from the cutting
area. Positioncord so it will not be
caught on branches and the like
duringcutting.
SToavoid losing control when cut is
complete, do not put pressure on
saw at end of cut.
SStop motorbefore setting saw down.
TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES
WARNING : Check for broken or
deadbranches which can fall while cutting
causing serious injury. Do not cut near
buildings or electrical wiresif you do not
know the direction of tree fall, nor cut at
nightsince you will not be able to see well,
nor during bad weather such as rain,
snow,strongwinds,etc.Ifthetreemakes
contact with any utility lin e, the utility com-
plany should be notified immediately.
SCarefully plan yoursa wingoperation in
advance.
SClear the work area. You need a clear
areaall around the tree so you can have
secure footing.
SThe chain saw operator should keep
on the uphillside of the terrain as the
tree is likely to roll or slide downhill af-
terit is felled.
SStudy the natural conditions that can
cause the tree to fall in a partic ular direc-
tion, such as:
SThe wind directionand speed.
SThelean of the tree. The lean of a tree
mightnot be apparent due to uneven
orsloping terrain.Use a plumb or lev-
el to determine the direction of tree
lean.
SWeightand branches on one side.
SSurroundingtrees and obstacles.
SLook for decay and rot. If the trunk is
rotted,it can snap andfall toward the
operator.
