Обаче операционната система (Windows) изчислява обема на устройството на база 1 KБ = 1024 байта и затова представянето на обема на твърдия диск в Windows се различава (стойността е по-малка) от действителния обем.

(Напр. Windows представя обема на 80 ГБ твърд диск като 74,5 ГБ = 80 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 байта/(1024 x 1024 x 1024) байта = 74,505 ГБ)

Вдопълнение към горното, представеният в Windows обем може да бъде дори още по-малък, понеже някои програми като Recovery Solution може да се намират в скрита област на твърдия диск.
