Venting System Inspection

At least once ayear avisual inspection should be madeof
the venting system. Youshould look for:
I. Obstructions which could causeimproper venting. The
combustion and ventilation air flow must not be
obstructed.
2. Damage or deterioration which could cause improper
venting or leakage of combustion products.
3. Rustedflakes around top of water heater.
WARNING
Besure the ventpiping is properly connected to pre-
vent escape of dangerous flue gasses which could
causedeadly asphyxiation.
WARNING
IObstructions and deteriorated vent systemsmay pre- 1

sentserious health risk or asphyxiation. 1
WARNING
Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system
nay occur ifalr for combustioncontains certain chem-
ca/vapors. Spray can propellants, cleaning solvents,
'efrigerator and air conditioner refrigerants, swimming
)ool chemicals, calcium and sodium chloride, waxes,
)leach and processchemicals are typical compounds
which are potentially corrosive.
WARNING
If after inspection of the vent systemyoufound sooting
or deterioration, something is wrong and a Sears
ServiceTechnician musthe called in, theproblem cor-
rected, and the flue and venting cleanedor replaced
before resumingoperation on the water heater.
WARNING
Sootbuild-up indicates a problem that requirescorrec-
tion before further use.Turn "OFF" gas to water heater
and leave "OFF" until repairsare macle, becausefailure
to correct the cause of the sooting can result ina fire
causingDEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROP-
ERTYDAMAGE.

Burner Cleaning

Inthe event your burner needs cleaning, usethe following

lint on a regular basis.

Burner Inspection

At leastonce a yeara visual inspection should be madeof
the main burner and pilot burner. The drawing is for your
reference.
You should check for sooting which is not normal and
will impair proper combustion.
WARNING
INSTALLED IN SUITABLE AREA:To insure sufficient
ventilation and combustion air supply, proper clear-
ances from the water heater mustbe maintained. See
"Locatin_ the New Water Heater" section. Combustible
materials such as clothing, cleaning materials, or
flammable liquids, etc. must not beplaced againstor
adjacentto thewater heater which can causea fire.
