El ruido es una de las peores molestias existentes en el medio ambiente y un factor de estrés que debe tomarse muy en serio. Investigaciones hechas han demostrado que el ruido afecta el sistema nervioso vegetativo. Los resultados son cansancio, falta de concentración, nerviosidad e irritabilidad. Además, el efecto del ruido continuo ocasiona daño permanente del oído.

Este problema afecta sobre todo a los pilotos. El nivel de intensidad sonora existente en el cabina de pilotaje es de unos 80 dB (A) en Jets y de entre 90 y 97 dB (A) en aviones de hélice. Además, al decolar y al aterrizar el ruido aumenta considerablemente. En consecuencia, en algunos pilotos se han detectado daños auditivos que ocasionaron una incapacidad prematura para el trabajo y, con ello, la pérdida de la licencia de vuelo.

Sin embargo, el ruido existente en la cabina de pilotaje se compone principalmente de frecuencias medias hasta bajas, y por eso es insuficiente la protección que puede lograrse con los Headsets de protección auditiva habituales.
