Adding Memory

In the future you may want to install memory modules to expand the functionality of your computer. You can increase memory up to 512 MB

(256 MB x 2), by installing optional memory modules. For selected models 128 MB of memory is pre-installed (128 MB x 1); for other models, 64 MB of memory is pre-installed (64 MB x 1). You can add an expansion memory module (64 MB, 128 MB, or 256 MB) in the memory module bay. Expansion memory modules are available as options. For memory upgrades, use only PC100 (CL2) SDRAM SO-DIMM (gold lead contacts).

!Make sure you observe the proper safety precautions when you install memory mod- ules in your computer. See the bulleted list below. Be careful when adding memory. Mistakes when installing or removing a memory module may cause a malfunction.

Before you start

The procedures described below assume you are familiar with the general terminology associated with personal computers and with common safety practices required for using and modifying electronic equipment.

Disconnect your system from its power source and from any telecommunications links, networks, or modems before you open the system or follow any of the procedures described below. Personal injury or equipment damage may result from failure to take these precautions.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage memory modules and other components. Perform the procedures described below only at an ESD workstation. If such a station is not available, do not work in a carpeted area, and do not handle materials that produce or hold static electricity (cellophane wrappers, for example). Ground yourself by maintaining contact with an unpainted metal portion of the chassis while performing the procedure.

Do not open the memory module package until you are ready to install the module. The package protects the module from ESD.
