A. Glossary

The following list covers most of the abbreviations, acronyms and terms used in

TANDBERG Television Lim ited Manuals. All terms ma y not be included in this manual.

mmMicrometre (former name - micron): a unit of length equal to one millionth (10-6) of a metre.
3:2 pulldown A technique used when converting film material (which operates at 24 pictures per second) to 525-line v ideo
(operating at 30 pictures per second).
4:2:0 Digital video coding method in which the colour difference signals are sampled on alternate lines at half th e
luminance rate.
4:2:2 Digital video coding method in which the colour difference signals are sampled on all lines at half the lumi nance
rate.
422P@ML 422 Profile at Main Level: A subset of the MPEG-2 standard, which supports digital video storage (DVD etc.) and
transmissions up to 50 Mbit/s over various mediums. Used for Contribution and Distribution applicati ons.
5B6B 5 Binary Bits Encoded to 6 Binary Bits: Block code.
AC-3 Audio Coding algorithm number 3 (See Dolby Digital).
ACC Authorisation Control Computer.
ADPCM Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation: An advanced PCM technique that reduces the bit-rate by coding
the difference values between successive samples rather than the absolute value of each sample.
ADT Audio, Data And Teletext.
AFC Automatic Frequency Control.
AFS Automation File Server.
AGC Autom atic Gain Control.
AMOL I and II Automatic Measure of Line-ups I and II: Used by automated equipment to measure programme-viewing ratings.
ASI Asynchronous Serial Interface.
ASIC Application-Specific Integrated Circuit: A customised chi p designed to perform a specific function.
Async Asynchronous.
ATM Asynchronous Transfer Mode: A connection orientated, cell based, data transport technology designed for
Broadband ISDN (B-ISDN). It provides a circuit-switched bandwidth-on-demand carrier system, with the flexibility
of packet switching. It offers low end-to-end delays and (negotiable on call set-up) Quality of Service guarant ees.
Asynchronous refers to the sporadic nature of the data being transmitted. Cells are transmitted only when data is
to be sent; therefore the time interval between cells varies according to the availability of data.
ATSC Advanced Television Standards Committee: An organisation founded in 1983 to research and develop a digital
TV standard for the U.S.A. In late 1996, the FCC adopted the ATSC standard, the digital counterpart of the NTSC
standard.
