Pelco switchers that include the ASCII protocol in their software communicate directly with the VMX300(-E) workstation, as shown in Figure 2.

The ASCII protocol is native to all of the matrix switchers except for the CM9740 Series and some of the older CM9760 Series switchers. These non-native switchers require a hardware data translator (CM9760-DT) to translate between the device’s native protocol and the ASCII protocol, as shown in Figure 3.
