Connecting to the Phone Line
You don’t need to install a new phone jack or phone
•Phone line. Almost every household phone line is a standard analog line, which is what the Recorder requires to complete Guided Setup. Do not connect the Recorder to a digital PBX phone system (these allow many phones to share a single telephone number and are usually used in hotels and office buildings). Doing so may permanently damage your Recorder’s modem and will void your warranty.
•Phone jack. If the phone jack isn’t close to the Recorder, you can use the
Your cable or satellite box may require a connection to your phone line, too. To connect both the Recorder and your cable or satellite box to the same phone jack, plug the provided phone line splitter into the phone jack.
After you complete Guided Setup, you will be able to connect your Recorder to a home network and use a shared broadband Internet connection instead of a phone line to make connections to the TiVo service. See Chapter 8, “Connecting to a Home Network,” in the User’s Guide.
If you don’t have a home network with a shared broadband Internet connection, the Recorder must use a standard phone line to connect to the TiVo service. We recommend leaving the phone cord plugged in continuously in order to keep your Recorder’s program information up to date.
