Why does the Recorder have to be connected to a phone line?

The Recorder needs to be connected to a phone line or to broadband Internet access to make its regular connection to the TiVo service. This connection downloads program information, which tells the Recorder when programs are scheduled to air and on what channel. It also downloads additional information from the TiVo service, such as service updates.
