Chapter 17 – Glossary

Ad-Hoc Network

A direct network connection between two devices (two computers, or a PC and the

 

Streamium LCD TV).

 

 

Access Point

A network connection between two or more devices (computers, or PCs and the

(Infrastructure network)

Broadband

The Internet bandwidth determines the speed of your Internet connection. Broadband

Firewall

The most popular type of wired home network.

A firewall acts as a barrier that helps protect your network from intruders from the Internet. The firewall specifies what information can be communicated from the computers on your network to the Internet, and from the Internet to the computers on your network.

Gamma

Display intensity setting for different types of TV screens.

 

 

Gateway

The computer or network device that provides access to the Internet.

 

 

Home Link/PC Link

Refer to accessing streaming content from the home network.

 

 

Horizontal position

Shifts the horizontal position of the display on the TV screen.

Infrastructure Network

See Access Point.

 

 

MAC Address

The unique 12-character hardware address of the (wireless) network

 

adapter. Sometimes used for identifying network hardware.

 

 

NAT (Network Address

A security feature implemented in most Internet gateway routers and Wireless Base

Translation)

Stations to keep your home network safe from intrusions from the Internet.

 

 

Peer-to-peer

Philips Media Manager

The software you need to install and have active on your computer to be able to use

Shielded Twisted Pair.The type of network cable you need to use.

 

 

Streaming

Playing media content from the Internet while it is downloading is called ‘streaming’.

 

 

Streamium

The Philips range of Internet enabled products.

 

 

uPnP

Universal Plug and Play.

 

 

Vertical position

Shifts the vertical position of the display on the TV screen.

WEP

Designates a type of wireless encryption.

 

 

Wireless Base Station

A hardware device that interconnects your wireless home network to the Internet.
