Using the Surround Modes

This unit activates a variety of Surround Modes automatically according to the stored basic settings and adjustments performed on the Setup and Adjustment Menus (see pages 26 to 38).

Reproducing Theater Ambience

In a movie theater, many speakers are located on the walls to reproduce impressive multi-surround sounds, reaching you from all directions.

With these many speakers, sound localization and sound movement can be expressed.

Surround modes built in this receiver can create almost the same surround sounds as you can feel in a real movie theater—with only five or seven speakers (plus subwoofer).

Introducing the Surround Modes

THX Surround EX (Dolby Digital EX)*

Best used to reproduce multichannel sound tracks of the software encoded with Dolby Digital EX.

To enjoy the software encoded with Dolby Digital EX, connect the source component using the digital terminal on the rear of this receiver. (See page 14.)

Dolby Digital EX is a new digital surround encoding format that adds the third surround channels, called “surround back”

(2 channels—but, the same signals are recorded for both left and right surround back channels).

Comparing to the conventional Dolby Digital 5.1CH, these newly added surround back channels can reproduce more detailed movements behind you while viewing the video software. In addition, surround sound localization will become more stable.

The THX Surround EX* mode built in this receiver decodes Dolby Surround EX encoding, and allows you to enjoy a realistic surround field in your listening room.

Furthermore, this decoder also works for any sound source, applying one of two THX Surround modes—“THX SURR EX” or “THX CINEMA.”

“THX SURR EX” or “THX CINEMA” is automatically selected when you press THX ON/OFF.

THX SURR EX : To reproduce the sound through all activated speakers. (Best for playing Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES encoded software)

THX CINEMA : To reproduce the sound through all activated speakers except the surround back speakers.

To enjoy the software encoded with Dolby Digital, connect the source component using the digital terminal on the rear of this receiver. (See page 14.)

Dolby Digital 5.1CH encoding method (so-called discrete 5.1 channel digital audio format) records and digitally compresses the left front channel, right front channel, center channel, left surround channel, right surround channel, and LFE channel signals (total 6 channels, but LFE channel is counted as 0.1 channel. Therefore, called 5.1 channel).

As each channel is completely independent from the other channel signals to avoid interference, you can obtain a much better sound quality with better stereo and surround effects.

In addition, Dolby Digital enables stereo surround sounds, and sets the cutoff frequency of the surround treble at 20 kHz, compared to 7 kHz for Dolby Pro Logic. As such, the sound movement and “being-there” feeling are enhanced much more than Dolby Pro Logic.
