For your reference

Dolby Pro LogicΙΙx, NEO:6, and SFC add surround effects by “adding” channels, so if they are off, the unit plays the number of channels recorded in the original source.

For example, if it is a 5.1-channel source, there will be no output from the surround back speakers.

The SURROUND mode turns off when input is 192-kHz PCM.

Whenever you switch to a different source, the following display appears to show you the number of channels. (It may not appear with some sources.)
