High-speed Back-end Design

New Hitachi high-performance back-end drives are available with the Lightning 9900Series. The drives are attached via Fibre Channel – Arbitrated Loops (FC-AL). Eight 100MB/sec FC-AL connect to dual ported drives for each ACP pair. With four configured ACP pairs installed (at 800 MB/sec per ACP pair) that’s 3.2GB/sec total back-end bandwidth to the physical drives.

Each FC-AL path is driven with a dedicated processor and a Data Recovery and Regeneration (DRR) circuit. This is in contrast to the Hitachi Freedom 7700E, where two of the FW-SCSI-2 paths in the back end were shared through a single processor and single DRR circuit. (See also Figure 2). Basically, the number of processors and DRR circuits in the back end of the Lightning 9900 Series has increased to 32 (for the Lightning 9960), compared to the 7700E’s 16. The diagram of a Lightning 9900Series ACP pair is shown in Figure 17 and Figure 18. Figure 19 illustrates all four ACP pairs with 32 back-end disks per array group.

The Lightning 9900Series uses advanced algorithms for managing performance of ACP pairs.

New Fibre Channel Disk Drives

The back-end performance of the Lightning 9900Series is enhanced with the introduction of a new dual ported/dual active Fibre Channel disk drive technology. These disk drives are specially designed and built by Hitachi Ltd. for the Lightning 9900Series. The disks are in a 3-inch form factor with capacities available in 18GB and 73GB spinning at 10,025RPM. These are all high-density disks (HDDs) spinning at high RPMs. The transfer rates with these new disks are approaching 60MB/sec. Higher sectors per physical track means less head movement and more data transferred per rotation, even when compared to the 7700E 15GB disks, which spin at 12,030RPM.

With Hitachi LUN Manager, open systems Logical Units LUNs can be defined, configured, and maintained. There is no more waiting for the hardware vendor to come and make configuration changes. Hitachi LUN Manager includes an easy-to-use, GUI-basedinterface that allows the easy definition of paths for LUNs, the reconfiguration of LUN-to-portassignments, or the viewing of the Lightning 9900 remote service information messages. Because the Hitachi LUN Manager can assign multiple paths to a single LUN, support of alternate path failover, path load balancing, and clustered systems is possible. Running on a standard Windows-basedPC connected to the storage subsystems by a dedicated LAN, Hitachi LUN Manager can support up to eight Lightning 9900 systems Hitachi Data Systems Hitachi CruiseControlStorage Maximizer Hitachi SANtinelHitachi Data Systems Data Protection Services Professional Services and SupportProfessional Services Overview Cost of Risk Analysis methodology CORAHitachi NanoCopy Implementation Service Data Protection Services LabRemote Copy Assessment and Implementation Service Hitachi Data SystemsOn-lineData Migration Service Professional Services and SupportContinuous Availability Service SAN servicesSoftware Portfolio Review and Analysis Service Hitachi Data SystemsSystem Configurations for the Performance ExperimentHitachi Data Systems The 7700E used all 6GB drives100BaseT Glossary of Terms10BaseT ACP pairBack end Hitachi Data SystemsAvailability Business Continuity Planning BCPCache GlossaryCARB CHIPControl Frame Hitachi Data SystemsConsistency Groups CORA Cost of Risk AnalysisData Duplication Disaster RecoveryGlossary Data MigrationElectronic vaulting Hitachi Data SystemsEBCDIC ESA/390Fast Ethernet GlossaryFailover Fast writeFICON File BackupHitachi Data Systems Front EndHDmS Hitachi FlashAccessGlossary Hitachi CruiseControlHitachi InstantSplit Hitachi Multiplatform Backup/RestoreHitachi Data Systems Hitachi LUN ManagerHitachi Resource Manager Hitachi Rapid RecoveryGlossary Hitachi SANtinelHYPERtape Hitachi Data SystemsHXRC Hitachi Extended Remote Copy JavaLightning 9900 Series Logical VolumeGlossary Logical UnitMIPS Hitachi Data SystemsMBCP Meta-dataMTTR GlossaryMTBF NanoCopyOpen system Hitachi Data SystemsOn-linesystem Operating SystemRAID Recovery TimeGlossary RAID ControllersSCSI SwitchHitachi Data Systems SnapshotGlossary Virtual Logical Volume Image ManagerVolume SynchronousHitachi Data Systems Warm siteWorkload Asia Headquarters Hitachi Data Systems Worldwide OfficesCorporate Headquarters Australia/New Zealand Headquarters
