Windows 98 SE Driver Installation

This chapter explains the following tasks on a computer running Windows 98 SE:

Install the network driver and NIC software using the 3Com Installation CD.

Verify the network driver installation.

To obtain the latest version of a driver, go to:

http://www.3com.com/

Search for “3CR990B” and “drivers.” The network driver can be used in both Microsoft and NetWare network environments.

Installing the Network Driver

To install the driver:

1Make sure that the NIC is installed in the computer, as described in “Installing and Connecting the NIC” on page 3.

2Turn on the power to the computer.

3Insert the 3Com Installation CD in the CD-ROM drive. If the main menu appears, click Exit.

Windows detects the NIC. The Add New Hardware Wizard starts and detects a new Ethernet Controller.

4Click Next.

Windows prompts you to search for the best driver for your device.

5Select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended), and then click Next.

6Make sure CD-ROM drive is selected, and then click Next. Windows detects the driver.

7Click Next.

8Click Finish.

The driver installation is complete.

9Restart the computer.

Verifying the Network Driver Installation

To verify successful NIC installation:

1Right-click My Computer and select Properties.

2Click the Device Manager tab.

The Device Manager window appears.

3Scroll down the list of hardware devices to Network Adapters. Click the plus sign (+) to the left of the icon to display the list of NICs currently configured.

4Make sure the 3Com NIC is installed and that there is not a red X or a yellow exclamation point (!) next to the device.
