BLADE CARE

Periodicallyinspectthe bladeadapterfor cracks,especiallyif you

strikea foreignobject.Replacewhen necessary.Followthe steps belowfor bladeservice.

Whenremovingthecuttingbladefor sharpeningor replacement, protectyourhandswitha pairof heavyglovesor usea heavyragto holdthe blade.

1.Disconnectsparkplugbootfromsparkplug.Turnmoweron its side makingsurethatthe air filterandthe carburetorarefacing up.

2.Removethe boltandthe bladebell supportwhichholdthe blade andthe bladeadapterto the enginecrankshaft.See Figure18.

3.Removebladeandadapterfromthe crankshaft.

4.Removebladefromthe adapterfor testingbalance.Balancethe bladeon a roundshaftscrewdriverto check. Removemetalfrom

the heavyside untilit balancesevenly.When sharpeningthe blade,followtheoriginalangleof grind.Grindeachcuttingedge equallyto keepthe bladebalanced.

Anunbalancedbladewillcauseexcessivevibrationwhen rotatingat highspeeds.It maycausedamageto mowerandcouldbreakcausin( personalinjury.

5.Lubricatethe enginecrankshaftandthe innersurfaceof the blade adapterwithlightoil. Slidethe bladeadapteronto the engine crankshaft.Placethe bladeonthe adaptersuchthatthe sideof the blademarked"Bottom"(or withpartnumber)facesthe ground whenthe moweris inthe operatingposition.Makesurethatthe bladeisalignedandseatedon the bladeadapterflanges.

6.Placebladebellsupporton the blade.Alignnotcheson the blade bellsupportwithsmallholesin blade.

7.Replacehexbolt andtightenhexbolt to torque:450in. Ibs.rain., 600in. Ibs.max.

Toensuresafeoperationof yourmower,periodicallycheckthe blade boltfor correcttorque.

BELT CARE

NOTE:Severalcomponentsmust beremovedin orderto changethe mower'sself-propulsiondrivebelt. SeeanauthorizedSearsService Centerto haveyourbelt replaced.

REPLACING BATTERY

Batteriescontainsulfuricacid whichmaycauseburns. Donot short I circuitormutilatebatteriesin anyway.Do not putbatteriesin fireas lthese mayburstorreleasetoxic materials.

1.Loosenstarknobssecuringupperandlowerhandlesand carefullyfoldthe upperhandledowntowardthelowerhandleas shownin Figure19.

2.Removethe two screwssecuringbatterycoverto batteryhousing andplacethemto the side.See Figure19.
