temperature-pressurereliefvalvebythemanufacturer.
Thevalveis certied by a nationally recognized testing laboratory
thatmaintainsperiodicinspectionofproductionoflistedequipmentof
materialsasmeetingtherequirementsforReliefValvesforHotWater
SupplySystems,ANSIZ21.22•CSA4.4,andthecoderequirements
of ASME.
Ifreplaced,thevalvemustmeettherequirementsoflocalcodes,but
notlessthan acombinationtemperature andpressurerelief valve
certiedasindicatedintheaboveparagraph.
Thevalvemust be marked with a maximum set pressure not to
exceedthemarkedhydrostaticworkingpressureofthewaterheater
(150psi=1,035kPa)and adischargecapacitynotlessthanthe
water heater
Btu/hrinputrate as shown on the water heater ’s
modelratingplate.
Forsafeoperationofthewaterheater,thereliefvalvemustnotbe
removedfromitsdesignatedopeningnorplugged.
Thetemperature-pressurereliefvalvemustbeinstalleddirectlyinto
thettingofthewaterheaterdesignedforthe reliefvalve.Position
thevalvedownward and provide tubing so that any discharge will
exitonlywithin6inches(15.2 cm)above,oratanydistance below
thestructuraloor.Becertainthatnocontactismadewithany live
electricalpart.Thedischargeopeningmustnotbeblockedorreduced
insizeunderanycircumstances.Excessivelength,over30feet(9.14
m),oruseofmorethanfourelbowscancauserestrictionandreduce
thedischargecapacityofthevalve,seeFigures10.
Novalveorotherobstruction istobeplacedbetween therelief
valveandthetank.Do notconnecttubingdirectlytodischarge
drainunlessa6”(15.2cm)airgapisprovided.Topreventbodily
injury,hazardtolife, orpropertydamage, thereliefvalve must
beallowedtodischargewaterinquantitiesshouldcircumstances
demand.Ifthedischargepipeisnotconnectedtoadrainorother
suitablemeans,thewaterflowmaycausepropertydamage.
TheDischargePipe:
•Shouldnotbesmallerinsizethantheoutletpipesizeofthevalve,or
haveanyreducingcouplingsorotherrestrictions.
•Shouldnotbepluggedorblocked.
•Shouldbeofmateriallistedforhotwaterdistribution.
•Shouldbeinstalledsoastoallowcompletedrainageofboththe
temperature-pressurereliefvalve,andthedischargepipe.
•Shouldterminateatanadequatedrain.
•Shouldnothaveany valve between the relief valve and
tank.
