Thewatertemperature is controlled using the Temperature
Controlonthe Displayatthe frontofthe unit(SeeFigure 1).
Thiscontrolutilizesatemperatureprobetodeterminethetank
temperature.Theprimarytemperature probeislocated atthe
topofthetank.
Thetemperaturemaybeadjustedfrom90°F/32°Cto160°F/71°C.
Thethermostatwasadjustedto 120°F/49°Cbeforetheheater
wasshippedfromthefactory.Itisrecommendedthatlowerwater
temperaturebeusedto avoidtheriskof scalding.Itisfurther
recommended,inallcases, thatthewatertemperaturebe set
forthelowesttemperaturewhichsatisfiesyourhotwaterneeds.
Thiswillalsoprovidethemostenergyefficientoperationofthe
waterheaterandminimizescaleformation.
Valvesforreducingthepoint-of-usetemperaturebymixingcold
andhotwater are available, see Figure 2. Also available are

Thetablebelowshowstheapproximatetime-to-burnrelationshipfor
normaladultskin.Shortrepeated heatingcyclescausedbysmall
hotwaterusescancausetemperaturesatthepointofusetoexceed
thethermostatsetting byupto 20°F/11°C.Ifyouexperience this
typeofuse,youshouldconsiderusinglowertemperaturesettings
toreducescaldhazards.

Thetopimmersionwellofthedualbulbcontrolleralsocontains
thehigh
limit(energycutoff) sensor. The high limit switch
interruptsmainburner
gasflowshouldwatertemperaturereach
approximately202°F/94°C.
Shouldthe high limit swi tch activate, the cont rol system will
automaticallyresettheunit oncethewatertemperature inthe
tankfallsbelow140°F/60°C. Iftheunitismanually shutdown
andrestarted,aslo ngasthetemperature inthetankislower
than160°F/71°C,theunitwillresetandinitiateoperation.
Ifyouexperiencehigherthanusualwatertemperaturealongwith
frequentautomaticresettingofthesystem,thisisevidenceofhigh
limitswitchoperation.Thefollowingarepossiblereasonsforhigh
limitswitchoperation.
• Amalfunctioninthethermostaticcontrolswouldallowthegas
controlvalvethermostat to remain open causing water
temperaturetoexceed the thermostat setting. The water
temperaturewouldcontinue to rise until high limit
switchoperation.
Contactyourdealer or servicer if continued high limit switch
operationoccurs.

Itisrecommendedthatlowerwatertemperaturesbeusedtoavoid
theriskofscalding.Itisfurtherrecommended,inallcases,thatthe
watertemperaturesbesetforthelowesttemperaturewhichsatises
yourhotwaterneeds.Thiswillalsoprovidethemostenergyefcient
operationofthewaterheater.
HOTWATERCANSCALD:Waterheatersareintendedtoproduce
hotwater.Waterheatedtoatemperature whichwillsatisfyspace
heating,clotheswashing,dishwashing,andothersanitizingneeds
canscaldandpermanentlyinjureyouuponcontact.Somepeople
aremorelikelytobepermanentlyinjuredbyhotwaterthanothers.
Theseincludetheelderly,children,theinrm,orphysically/mentally
handicapped.Ifanyone using hot water from this heater ts into
oneofthesegroupsorifthereisalocalcodeorstatelawrequiring
acertaintemperature water at the hot water tap, then you must
takespecialprecautions. Inadditionto usingthelowestpossible
temperaturesettingthatsatises yourhotwater needs,ameans
suchasamixingvalve,shouldbeusedatthehotwatertapsused
bythesepeopleoratthewaterheater.Mixingvalvesareavailable
atplumbingsupply or hardware stores, see Figure 2. Follow
manufacturer’sin structions for inst allation of the valv es. Before
changingthefactorysettingonthethermostat,readthe“Temperature
Regulation”sectioninthismanual.
Neverallowsmallchildrentouseahotwatertap,ortodrawtheirown
bathwater.Neverleaveachildorhandicappedpersonunattended
in a bathtub or shower.
Thewaterheatershouldbelocatedinanareawherethegeneral
publicdoesnothaveaccess.Ifasuitablearea isnotavailable,
acovershould be installed over the thermostat to prevent
tampering.Thewater temperature setting was factory set at
thelowesttemperature;THIS WATERHEATERISEQUIPPED
WITH AN ADJUSTABLE THERMOSTAT TO CONTROL WATER
TEMPERATURE. HOT WATER TEMPERATURES REQUIRED
FOR AUTO MATIC DI SHWASHER AND LAUNDRY USE CAN
CAUSE SCALD BURNS RESULTING IN SERIOUS PERSONAL
INJURYAND/ORDEATH.THE TEMPERATUREAT WHICH
INJURYOCCURSVARIESWITHTHEPERSON’SAGEANDTHE
TIME OF THE EXPOSURE. THE SLOWER RESPONSE TIME
OF CHILDREN, AGED OR DISABLED PERSONS INCREASES
THE HAZARDS TO THEM. NEVER ALLOW SMALL CHILDREN
TO USE A HOT WATER TAP, OR TO DRAW THEIR OWN BATH
WATER. NEVER LEAVE A CHILD OR DISABLED PERSON
UNATTENDED IN A BATHTUB OR SHOWER.
THE WATER HEATER SHOULD BE LOCATED IN AN AREA
WHERE THE GENERAL PUBLIC DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO
SET TEMPERATURES.
