4.8SURROUND MODES

A surround mode is signal processing that enhances original source material. Surround modes fall into two main categories – those that apply to stereo source material and those that apply to multichannel source material.

By factory default, all surround speakers are used with any source material except 1.0-channel – change presets in menu 7 after finding your preferences.

Surround modes do not apply to sources set to Anlg-Dir in menu 6.

Regarding Anlg-DSP: There is no way for a processor to detect how the source material was encoded, or whether 6-Ch is playing DVD-A vs SACD. The surround mode must be selected manually.

Stereo Source Material:

This includes analog stereo, digital PCM stereo, and Dolby Digital 2.0 source material. Surround modes can be applied to provide up to 7.1 channels of output. They are described later in this section. Each Source memorizes its own Mode setting, so you can, for example, set TV to ‘AnthemLogic-Cinema’, and CD to ‘AnthemLogic-Music’.

5.1- and 6.1-Channel Source Material:

The AVM 50 engages decoding according to the format that you select on each DVD.

Once the AVM 50’s display shows the format, you can select additional processing, described throughout this section. Your selections are memorized by format and by Source.

Why isn’t my AVM 50 detecting the sound format that I’m trying to play?

The connection can carry only one sound format at a time, and the processor plays exactly what it gets. Make sure your DVD player’s setup menu is set to leave Dolby Digital and DTS unchanged (“Bitstream”), otherwise output will always be 2.0-channel PCM! You must also select the soundtrack that you want to hear from each disc’s menu, or after the movie starts by pressing AUDIO on the player’s remote control.

If you are getting 2.0 when expecting 5.1, check your player.
