SNMP Basics
The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) facilitates the exchange of
management information among network devices. SNMP is part of the
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol suite. SNMP
enables you to manage network performance, find and solve network problems,
and plan for network growth.

SNMP Components

An SNMP-managed networkconsists of three key components: managed devices,
agents, and network management systems (NMSs).
Amanaged device is a network node that contains an SNMP agent and resides
on a managed network. Managed devices collect and store management
information and makeit available using SNMP. The Cisco ICS 7750 includes
the following managed devices:
System processing engine (SPE) cards
Analog station interface (ASI) cards
Multiservice route processor (MRP) cards
System switch processor (SSP) card
Catalyst 3524-PWRXL switches
An agent is network-management softwarethat resides on a managed device.
An agent has local knowledge of management information and translates it
into a form compatible with SNMP. The agent on the CiscoICS 7750 is
located on the SPE running System Manager.
