Chapter1 Using a Fabric Extender with a Cisco Nexus 5000 Series Switch
Cisco Nexus 2248TP-E
You can use this FEX with the Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switch. The Cisco Nexus 2248TP-E is managed
and configured by the upstream swit ch. The FEX software ships wit h the Cisco Nexus 5000 Series
switch software. The FEX download s the software image from the sw itch the same way that a module
would download it from the supervisor in a modular chassis.

Chassis
The Cisco Nexus 2248TP-E FEX chassis has a height of 1.72 inches (4.37 cm), a width of 17.3 inches
(43.94 cm), and a depth of 17.7 inches (44.96 cm). It weighs 17.7 pounds (8.0 kg). Its one-rack-unit (1
RU) form factor takes up relatively little space, ma king it easy to incorporate into rack designs. The FEX
is mounted in a standard 19-inc h (48.26 cm) rack. All switch p orts at the rear of the unit are in close
proximity to server ports, and all user-serviceable components are accessible from the front panel.
You can order it with front-to-back or back-to-front air cooling, and with AC or DC power supplies. If
you are going to install the chassis with its front end facin g the cold aisle, you must orde r the chassis
with front-to-back air flow. If you are going to install the chassis with its b ack end facing the cold aisle,
you must order the chassis with back-to-front airflow.
Figure1-1 shows the location of the components found on the front of the chassis, and Figure1-2 shows
the location of components f ound on the rear of the chassis. For information on what the c hassis and
component LEDs indicate, see Table D-1 on page D-2.
