Dial Shelf Backplane
The Cisco AS5800 is equipped with a field-replaceable backplane module, which is designed to
meet critical safety, isolation, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. The
Cisco5814 dial shelf backplane includes 14 slots that seat the ingress trunk cards, the modem cards,
and the dial shelf controller cards. Fig ure1-6 shows the Cisco5814 dial shelf with no cards installed,
as viewed from the system front.

The dial shelf backplane contains no active components, e xcept for the nonvolatile random-access
memory (NVRAM) us ed for system identifica tion. This is locate d toward the top of the backplane
and provides 1024 bits of nonvolatile read-write memory.
The dial shelf backpl ane contains the connect ors that connect direct ly with the dial shelf cards and
dial shelf controller cards. It also includes a 20-pin molex MiniFit connector that connects to the
blower assembly. The dial shelf backplane also includes additional maintenance bus (MBus)
connectors to the power-entry modules (PEMs) and filter module, which are used for monitoring
environmental conditions. These backplane connectors are shown in Figure1-7.
