Chapter 5 Ethernet Cards

5.8.3 SFP Description

5.8.2.1.2 Example of CWDM or DWDM GBIC Application

A G-Series card equipped with CWDM or DWDM GBICs supports the delivery of unprotected Gigabit Ethernet service over Metro DWDM (Figure 5-9). It can be used in short-haul and long-haul applications.

5.8.3 SFP Description

SFPs are integrated fiber optic transceivers that provide high speed serial links from a port or slot to the network. Various latching mechanisms can be utilized on the SFP modules. There is no correlation between the type of latch to the model type (such as SX or LX/LH) or technology type (such as Gigabit Ethernet). See the label on the SFP for technology type and model. One type of latch available is a mylar tab (Figure 5-10), a second type of latch available is an actuator/button (Figure 5-11), and a third type of latch is a bail clasp (Figure 5-12).

SFP dimensions are:

Height 0.03 in. (8.5 mm)

Width 0.53 in. (13.4 mm)

Depth 2.22 in. (56.5 mm) SFP temperature ranges for are:

COM—commercial operating temperature range -5°C to 70°C

EXT—extended operating temperature range -5°C to 85°C

IND—industrial operating temperature range -40°C to 85°C
