Threshold: Setsthelevelwhichtheenvelope signalhastoreachbeforegainreductionisap plied.

Ratio: Setstheslopeofthesegmentabovethe threshold.Theratiocanbeadjustedforcom pressionorexpansion,dependingonthere quirement.Forfullbandexpansion(e.g.tore introducedynamicsintoanovercompressed signal),onewillusuallyworkwiththegain makeupsettomaximum.Thismeansthata 0.0dBinputwillbepassedthroughwithoutgain, signalsbelowthethresholdwillbereducedwith aconstantgain(dependingonthresholdand ratiosetting,canbereadfromthedisplaywhen touchingthegainmakeupcontroller),and signalsbetweenthethresholdand0.0dBFSget expanded.Forfullbandexpansion,onewill typicallyhavequitehighthresholds(1dB...– 4dB),becauseoftheresultingoverallgain.

Theexpandercanalsobeusedinfrequency selectivemode,forexampletorepairtheeffect ofamisusedmultibandcompressor–forthis purpose,thegainmakeupcanbesethigher thanthecalculatedmaximumsetting,to compensatefortheoverallgainthatthe expandercauses.Thiscanpotentiallycause overs(forloudsignalsintheexpandedband),it isthereforegoodpracticetoengagethesafety limiter(seebelow).
