Veryfastattacktimesettingssuchas20s,i.e. onesampleperiod,docatcheverytransient,but maydistortlowfrequencies.Toutiliselonger attacktimesandstillcatchfasttransients,use preview.
Release and Average: Theinputsignalis monitoredwithtwodifferentmethods:peak amplitude (*)andRMSvalue.Thepeakampli tudeistheprogrammeportionwedon'tperceive asveryloud,howeverwhichcaneasilycause overloads.TheRMSvalueoftheprogramme materialweperceiveasloudness.Itsvariations contributemosttothedynamicrangeofthe audio.
Thesidechainprocessorcomparesthetwo measurementsitobtainedfromthepeaksand theRMS.Theratiobetweenthetwodetermines whichtimeconstantwouldbetheappropriate release,e.g.aftershortdurationpeakthefaster releasewillbeappliedduringthereleasephase.
ThetimeperiodoverwhichtheRMSvalueofthe programmematerialisaveragedissetbythe "average"parameter.Theeffectoftheaverage parametercanbestbestudiedonthegainre
ductionmeter( ).Fast"average"settingswill causemostofthegainreductionmetertomove veryfast(dependingonthe"releasefast"set ting),slowersettingswilljusthavethetoppart ofthegainreductionmovefast,withthebottom partdependingonthe"releaseslow"setting.
