AE Lock

To set exposure for a subject that will not be in the focus frame in the final composition:

1Position the subject in the focus frame.

2Meter exposure.

Press the AE-Lbutton to meter exposure for the subject in the focus frame and then, keeping the AE-Lbutton pressed, press the shutter button halfway to focus. Focus and exposure will remain locked while the shut- ter button is pressed halfway, even if you later release the AE-Lbutton.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 as desired to refocus before taking the picture.

3Recompose the picture.

Keeping the shutter button pressed halfway, recompose the picture.

cCaution

Adjusting zoom ends AE lock. AE lock is not available with Intelligent Face Detection.

4Shoot.

Press the shutter button the rest of the way down to take the picture.

aNote

If AE-L2is selected for kAE-LOCK MODE in the setup menu (pg. 96), exposure will lock when the AE-Lis pressed and remain locked until the button is pressed again.
