FSE software: releases, hot fixes, and system maintenance releases

FSE software is distributed in form of FSE releases, FSE hot fixes, and FSE system maintenance releases. FSE hot fixes and FSE system maintenance releases are meant for fixing problems that emerged after the new FSE version was released. The next sections describe the differences between them and provide recommendations for their usage.

FSE releases

Every new FSE release introduces new functionality. An FSE release with a new minor version number introduces functional improvements and enhancements, while an FSE release with a new major version number introduces major functionality changes and/or architectural redesigns. The FSE release installation process uses the native operating system installation method, that is RPM packages.

FSE hot fixes

An FSE hot fix is an update to the FSE software that solves one or more problems that were reported by FSE customers or FSE support engineers. It is based either on an FSE release or an FSE system maintenance release. Each new FSE hot fix solves one or more newly reported problems.

An FSE hot fix includes all packages and files that are included into FSE release software. Therefore, a hot fix replaces the entire FSE software fileset. It can be either used for a first-time FSE installation, or an existing FSE installation can be upgraded with it.

FSE hot fixes are cumulative. This means that an FSE hot fix with a particular consecutive number contains all functional changes of the hot fixes that are labelled with smaller consecutive numbers, and therefore supersedes all of them.

NOTE: FSE hot fixes are designed to solve the problems that emerge between release dates of FSE releases and/or FSE system maintenance releases. If an FSE hot fix and a particular SMR containing this hot fix are available, you are recommended to use the SMR rather than the hot fix.

FSE system maintenance releases

An FSE system maintenance release (SMR) includes functional changes and improvements of several FSE hot fixes. It can be treated as an FSE release, improved with all the FSE hot fixes that were included into it. Usually, it includes all the hot fixes that have been released and confirmed by the time the system maintenance release was prepared, which are complemented with additional, SMR-only enhancements.

An FSE system maintenance release includes all packages and files that are included into FSE release software. Therefore, an SMR replaces the entire FSE software fileset. It can be either used for a first-time FSE installation, or an existing FSE installation can be upgraded with it.
