Electrical Instructions
Caution: This tool must be grounded while in use to protect the operator from electric shock.
Note: The JDP-20VS-1 is rated at 115/230V and comes pre-wired at 230V. The JDP-20VS-3 is rated at
230Vand cannot be changed.
Inthe event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding providesa path of least resistancefor electric
currentto reduce the risk of electric shock. This tool is equippedwith an electriccord having an
equipment-groundingconductor anda grounding plug. The plug must be pluggedinto a matchingoutlet
that is properly installed and grounded in accordancewith all localcodes and ordinances.
Do not modifythe plug provided. If it will not fitthe outlet, have the properoutlet installed by a qualified
electrician.
Improperconnection of the equipment-grounding conductorcan resultin a risk of electric shock. The
conductor, with insulation having an outer surfacethat isgreen with or without yellow stripes, isthe
equipment-grounding conductor. If repair or replacementof the electriccord or plug is necessary,do not
connectthe equipment-groundingconductor to alive terminal.
Checkwith a qualified electrician or service personnel ifthe grounding instructions are not completely
understood,or if in doubt as to whether the tool is properly grounded. Use only three wire extension cords
that have three-prong grounding plugs and three-pole receptaclesthat accept the tool's plug.
Repairor replace a damaged or worn cord immediately.
Important Information
The JDP-20VS-1 comes pre-wiredfrom the factory at 230V. Itis strongly recommendedthat this drill
press be operated at 230V. If, however, you decide to change the operatingvoltage to 115V, please be
advisedthat the drill press may be hard to start when setat a higherR.P.M. When operating the drill
press, lowerthe R.P.M.to the lowestsetting before turning the machineoff. This will make starting the
machineeasier.
115 Volt Operation
Note: The JDP-20VS-1 is rated at 115/230Vand comes pre-wired at 230V. The JDP-20VS-3 is rated at
230Vonly and cannot be changed.
If 115V, single-phase operation is desired; the following instructionsmust befollowed:
1. Disconnect the machine from thepower source.
2. This drill press is supplied with four motor leadsthat are connected for 230Voperation, as shown in
Figure D. Reconnectthese four motor leads for 115V operation,as shown in Figure C.
3. If the drill press isto be fitted with a plug insteadof hard-wired, itshould only be connectedto an
outlet having the sameconfiguration as illustrated bythe grounded outlet box in Figure E. No adapter
isavailable or should be usedwith a 230Vplug.
Important: Inall cases (115 or 230 volts), make certain the receptacle in question is properly
grounded. Ifyou are not sure, havea licensedelectrician check the receptacle.
