Check that the CD is securely mounted on the spindle and that the printed side of the CD is facing out.
Is the playback side of the CD clean? To clean a CD, use a damp cloth and wipe from the center outward. Never clean a CD with a circular motion.
If the CD is a home recorded CD or a homemade copy of a CD, be sure that the CD was finalized. For more information on finalization, consult the documentation for the CD burning software that was used to create the CD.
Never attempt to play CDs that are warped, cracked,
Never play a CD that has tape or anything else attached to its surface that could throw it out of balance. CDs spin at high speeds and anything that unbalances them can cause wobble which eventually damages the transport or laser focusing system.
