Fraction Tower® Cubes Activity Guide

Snap together the Fraction Tower® Cubes and help your students understand basic fraction concepts and operations. Fraction Tower® Cubes enable students to relate abstract ideas to concrete activities as they can see, touch, and combine and compare various pieces!

Your fifty-one piece set includes: one red whole, two pink halves, three orange thirds, four yellow fourths, five green fifths, six teal sixths, eight blue eighths, ten purple tenths, and twelve black twelfths.

ACTIVITIES

TheUnitredFractionscube is equal to one whole unit. Compare the pink cube to the red cube. It takes two pink cubes to match the height of one red cube. The pink cubes thus have a value of one-half, as designated. Demonstrate that same-color cubes are equal in value. Continue comparing cubes to the unit. Discuss fraction relationships. Incorporate vocabulary terms such as part, whole, numerator, denominator, equal-sized parts, and unit fraction in your discussion.

ShowProperstudentsFractionshow to build same-color proper fractions. Demonstrate that is made using one yellow cube, is made using two yellow cubes, and ￿￿ is made using three yellow cubes￿ . Continue this activity by building￿￿ various unit and proper fractions with denominators of 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12.
