2.2.6 Setting SCSI IDs

You must set each SCSI device and the host adapter to a separate SCSI ID. The IDs are 0 through 7 for an 8-bit bus and 0 through 15 for a 16-bit bus. SCSI ID 7 is the preset host adapter setting, giving it the highest priority on the SCSI bus. If you plan to boot your computer from a hard disk drive on the SCSI bus, that drive should have SCSI ID 0, or the lowest SCSI ID on the bus. The PCI Storage Device Management System SDMS 4.0 User’s Guide explains how to set your host adapter ID using the SCSI BIOS Conﬁguration Utility.

The peripheral device SCSI IDs are usually set with jumpers or with a switch on the peripheral. Refer to the peripheral manufacturer’s instructions and to the user’s manual for your computer to determine the ID of each device and how to change it. No duplication of SCSI IDs is allowed on a SCSI bus.

Step 1. Determine the SCSI ID of each device on the SCSI bus. Note any duplications.

Step 2. Make any necessary changes to the SCSI IDs and record the IDs for future reference. Correct any duplications at this time. Table 2.1 on page 2-19is provided as a place to keep this record.
