Locking the Exposure Before Shooting (AE Lock)

AE Lock is a function that locks the exposure (brightness) prior to taking a picture. Use this when the subject is too small to obtain a proper exposure or is backlit.

1Assign [AE Lock] to the =/Lbutton.

Refer to “Setting the =/LButton Operation” (p.169) for details.

2 Set the exposure, and press the =/Lbutton.

The camera locks the exposure at that instant.

@ is displayed in the status screen, viewfinder, and Live View screen while the AE Lock is engaged.

Press the =/Lbutton again to cancel AE Lock.

• The exposure remains locked in the following situations.

while the =/Lbutton is pressed

while the shutter release button is pressed halfway

for twice the amount of the meter operating time (p.97)

You will hear a beep when AE Lock is activated and deactivated. The beep can be turned off. (p.208)

AE Lock is not available in pmode.

If you want to also lock the exposure when the focus is locked, set [4. AE-L with AF Locked] of the [ACustom Setting 1] menu to [On].

When amode is set, if the shutter speed or aperture value is changed while AE Lock is engaged, the combination of shutter speed and aperture value changes while the exposure remains the same.

When using a zoom lens whose maximum aperture varies depending on the focal length, the combination of shutter speed and aperture value changes depending on the zooming position even while AE Lock is engaged.
