Matriz activa (Active matrix)

Trata-se de um tipo de estrutura de monitor de cristal líquido na qual transístores de comutação são anexados a cada pixel para controlar a tensão de ligar/desligar. Produz uma visualização mais brilhante e nítida com um ângulo de visão mais alargado do que um monitor de matrizes passivo. Também conhecido por TFT (transístor de película fina).

Silicone amorfo (a-Si)

Um material de semicondutor utilizado para produzir a camada de transístores de película fina (TFTs) de um LCD de matriz activa.

Relação altura/largura (Aspect ratio)

A relação entre a largura e a altura de uma área activa do monitor. Em geral, a maior parte dos monitores apresenta uma relação altura/largura de 4:3. Os monitores ou TVs largos têm uma relação altura/largura de 16:9 ou 16:10.

Luz de fundo (Backlight)

A fonte de luz de um LCD transmissivo. Nos LCDs actuais, são utilizadas duas técnicas. A maioria dos painéis TFT LCD utiliza CCFLs (luz fluorescente de catódio frio) e um painel difusor directamente atrás da camada de cristal líquido. Está ainda em desenvolvimento uma nova tecnologia que utiliza Díodos Emissores de Luz (LED).
