Du kan gøre et billedes baggrund sløret eller skarpt ved at ændre på blænderen. Dette er tæt forbundet til dybdeskarpheden (DOF), der kan udtrykkes som værende enten lille eller stor.

Blænderhuset indeholder adskillige blade. Disse blade bevæger sig sammen og kontrollerer den mængde af lys, der kommer gennem blænderens midte. Antallet af blade har også effekt på lysets former, når der tages billeder om natten. Hvis blænderen har et lige antal blade, deles lyset op i et tilsvarende antal dele. Hvis antallet af blade er ulige, vil antallet af dele være dobbelt så stort som antallet af blade.

En blænder med 8 blade deler eksempelvis lyset op i 8 dele, og en blænder med 7 blade giver 14 dele.
