The SZI 1015-T modulator/radiator emits the infra-red light in a lobar shape. The IR intensity decreases with the distance. When a receiver leaves the area covered by the radiator, transmission is interrupted. Receivers without squelch will produce a hissing noise, receivers with squelch will mute.
