Restrictions of IEEE 1394

You cannot violate the 63 device limitation. If an additional device is added beyond the 63 device limit none of the devices will be able to determine their position in the i.LINK chain, and so all devices will be unable to communicate.

You cannot violate the sixteen hop limitation between any two devices. A device beyond the 16 hop limitation will make the amount of time it takes for the signal to complete between the two farthest devices longer than the time allowed to complete, so the devices will not be able to communicate.

Another restriction of i.LINK technology is that you cannot loop connections.

Some devices such as computers or cards within computers will not be able to pass signals through if they are not powered on. Please consult with the owner’s manual for the device.
