Decomposing a Rational Function
To examine the decomposition of the rational function f(x)=(x3N10x2Nx+50)/(xN2) on a
graph:
1. On the Home screen, enter the rational
function as shown below and store it in a
function f(x).
Enter: (x^3N10x^2Nx+50)/(xN2)!f(x)
Note: Actual entries are displayed in
reverse type in the example screens.
2. Use the proper fraction function
(propFrac) to split the function into a
quotient and remainder.
3. Copy the last answer to the entry line.
–or–
Enter: 16/(xN2)+x^2N8xN17
Note: Move the cursor into the history
area to highlight the last answer. Press
¸ to copy it to the entry line.
4. Edit the last answer in the entry line. Store
the remainder to y1(x) and the quotient to
y2(x) as shown.
Enter: 16/(xN2)!y1(x): x^2N8ùxN17!y2(x)
