The TiVo Premiere box was engineered with t he ability to easily integrate

with popular control systems v ia IP or IR with a transmitter. By default, the

feature that allows network dev ices to control the TiVo unit via IP is turne d

off to ensure network security.

Important Default Setting

TiVo DVRs can be controlled by networ ked devices, such as Crestron h ome

control systems. Beginning wit h version 9.4 of the TiVo software, this feature

isturnedOFFbydefaulttoensurehomene tworksecurity.Toenablethis

featureandturnitON,dothefollowing:

1. Go to TiVo Central > Messages & S ettings > Settings >

Remote, CableCARD & Devices > Netw ork Remote Control

2. Choose “Enabled

3. Press “Select

These partner companies hav e control modules readily available. If yo ur

preferred control system does n ot have a module available, you can progra m

one using the “TCP Remote Protocol” as a guide. You should already be

familiar with the mechanics of opening and using TCP connections befo re

using the protocol.

CableCARD – is a specialized version of
a PCMCIA card designed spec ifically to
decode scrambled digital cable signals.
TiVo Premiere DVRs use a Multi-s tream
CableCARD (M-Card ) which is inserte d
into a slot in the back of the DVR.
CableCARDS must be ac tivated by
a cable provider.
Digital Tuning Adapter (DTA): A Tuning
Adapter is a small set top box that gi ves
your CableCARD-eq uipped TiVo box the
ability to request swi tched digital video
(SDV) channels. Like Cable CARDs, Tuning
Adapters are part of the dig ital cable
system, so they must be is sued by the cable
provider. Tuning Adapters are installed in
the cable line between th e TiVo box and
the cable wall outlet. An ad ditional USB
connection is used by the T iVo box to
send channel tuning requests to the Tuning
Adapter, which transmits th e requests
back to the cable system.
Media Access Key (MAK) – is the nu merical
passcode assigned to any c ontent associ-
ated with the TiVo account. All d evices
on the same account share the s ame MAK
to verify permission to access content.
You may be prompted to enter this
number when setting up ad ditional TiVo
devices and accessories.
MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance)
Delivers a high-speed network connection
through existing coax c able. Some TiVo
products feature a built- in MoCA bridge
(XL4), others require an Eth ernet-coax bri dge.
Multi-Service-Operator (MSO) – refers
to large entities offering a m ultitude of
services including cable, internet, phone
and security. When used in r eference to
TiVo products it implie s a synonym for
cable company.
Network Attached Sto rage (NAS)
is an detached storage so lution with can
be accessed via a networ k or FTP site.
This storage is in turn shar ed with all
other devices authorize d on the network.
In reference to TiVo, NAS can provid e
additional storage for all n etworked units.
Over-the-top (OTT) – Content design ated
by the provider as above and beyon d
traditional linear channels provided by
the cable company.
Season Pass® recording – TiVo feature
that keeps track of a show that i s part of
a series. Set one up, and the TiVo ser vice
will make sure to record the show ever y
week, even if the day or time cha nges.
You can tell the TiVo box how many
episodes to keep and if it shou ld
record reruns.
TiVo App – t he free all-purpo se mobile
applicationforiOS,Android ,andKindle
HD enables TV guide data, r emote DVR
management, and touch screen control
for compatible TiVo DVRs.
TiVo Service Number (T SN) – refers
to the unique identifier associated with
every box manufactur ed by TiVo Inc.
This number identifies as pects of the
box to TiVo Customer Servic e to help
assist in troubleshoot ing among other
activities.
Trickplay Bar - shown as green linear
bar on the bottom of the scree n, the
Trickplay Bar represents the c ontinuous
video stream a TiVo DVR is proces sing
and allows for manipulation of vi deo
content with operations f or pause,
rewind, and resume.
Video on Demand (VOD) – refer s to
services that grant ac cess to content

pay for each individual piece of c ontent.
Subscription-base dVOD,likeNetix
and Hulu Plus, offer a flat monthl y fee

TiVo products with buil t-in MoCA
capability and the abili ty to integrate
into a home network via Ethe rnet or
coaxial cable in order to sha re content.
