Apparaten worden van een merkteken voorzien overeenkomstig Europese Richtlijn 2002/96/EC inzake afgedankte elektrische en elektronische apparatuur (waste electrical and electronic equipment, WEEE). Deze richtlijn bepaalt het raamwerk voor het retourneren en recyclen van gebruikte apparatuur, zoals van toepassing binnen de Europese Unie.
