HiSpeed Switch Troubleshooting Guide

Classical IP over ATM (CIP)

Classical IP (CIP) allows devices in different IP subnets to communicate across an ATM network. If the Classical IP (CIP) interfaces are on different LIS (Logical IP subnets), and an external router is required. However, if the Classical IP (CIP) interfaces are on the same IP subnet, an external router is not required. Clients use the ATM ARP Server to obtain IP to ATM address mappings for end nodes in the Logical IP Subnets (LIS).

*To route between different Logical IP subnets (LIS) over CIP, an external router is required. **To route on the same Logical IP subnet (LIS) over CIP, an external router is not required.

***When configuring PVC connections through an ATM switch, ensure the bi-directional path is established per port/interface on the ATM switch.

****CIP IP addresses must be on different subnets than those existing on the HiSpeed switches.

*****Valid CIP index ranges from 0 through 31.

******When configuring PVC, valid VCI values begin with 32.

Point-to-Point Bridging (PTOP)

Point to Point Bridging (PTOP) allows devices on the same IP subnet to communicate across ATM. Because VLAN information is not propagated across ATM, only one VLAN can communicate on a single virtual channel connection (VCC). PTOP can either use Permanent Virtual Connections (PVCs) or Switches Virtual Connections (SVCs).
